Higonokami – A Symbol of Traditional Japanese Folding Knives

Originating in the late 19th century in Miki City, Hyogo Prefecture, Higonokami is one of Japan’s oldest and most renowned folding knife brands. With a simple yet refined design, Higonokami is not only a sharp and reliable cutting tool but also a meaningful piece of Japanese knife history and culture.

History & Origins

First introduced in 1896, Higonokami emerged when blacksmiths in Miki City began crafting folding knives to meet the growing demand for practical everyday tools. The name “Higonokami” (肥後守) is derived from a title once held by samurai in the former Higo Province (present-day Kumamoto). To preserve its legacy and authenticity, the Miki Blacksmith Association registered "Higonokami" as a trademark, allowing only licensed craftsmen to produce knives under this name.

Key Features of the Higonokami Knife

Classic, Minimalist, and Functional Design

The Higonokami knife features a friction folder mechanism—meaning it has no locking system, yet remains safe to use thanks to the chikiri (a small lever on the blade's spine), which allows for controlled opening and handling of the blade. This design reflects a balance of simplicity and effectiveness.

Razor-sharp blade made from premium steel

Higonokami knives are crafted using high-quality Japanese steels such as:

  • Aogami (Blue Steel) – Extremely sharp with excellent edge retention, perfect for those seeking precision cutting performance.
  • Shirogami (White Steel) – Offers exceptional sharpness and is easy to resharpen.
  • SK Steel (High-speed steel) – Known for its abrasion resistance and commonly used in more affordable Higonokami models.

Handcrafted by Master Blacksmiths

Each Higonokami knife is meticulously forged using traditional Japanese techniques. This craftsmanship gives every piece its own unique character—making it not only a practical tool but also a valuable work of art.

Versatile Uses to the Higonokami Knife

  • Everyday Utility: Used as a versatile tool for daily tasks such as outdoor activities, sharpening pencils, cutting paper, and opening packages.
  • Craftsmanship & Carving: Widely favored by artisans for wood carving and other handmade craftwork.
  • Collectible & Gift-Worthy: With its historical significance and high quality, Higonokami makes a meaningful gift for Japanese knife enthusiasts and collectors.
